Alabama releases 2016 depth chart ahead of season-opener

Alabama released its 2016 depth chart Monday ahead of its season-opener against USC. As coach Nick Saban always is quick to point out, the depth chart isn’t final, with some starting and backup positions likely seeing at least a few changes over the course of the season.

At the same time, there are some positions that don’t yet have a firm starter, which the team indicated on the depth chart with a slash mark (/).

At quarterback, one of the most widely talked about position battles in the nation this offseason, Saban has narrowed down the list. Redshirt junior Cooper Bateman – who was last season’s backup – and redshirt freshman Blake Barnett “are the two guys we're getting ready to play (against USC),” Saban said.

But on the depth chart itself, Bateman, Barnett and true freshman Jalen Hurts were all listed at the starting spot on the depth chart with a slash mark between their names. Saban, though, seemed to hint that Hurts could still play at some point this season.

Sophomore David Cornwell was the other quarterback who had been in the running for the starting job.

Other notable listed starters were at running back, center, right guard, cornerback and “Star,” which is a nickel back in the Tide’s defense, because of the offseason battles at those positions.

Alabama and Saban have made it a tradition to release the team’s depth chart on the Monday of its season opener over the past few seasons. If tradition holds, no other official depth chart will be released this season.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide opens its season against USC on Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Here is the complete depth chart:
