Jim McElwain is a good choice for the Florida coaching job for several reasons. His time at Alabama under Nick Saban was a positive. McElwain is a good recruiter. He was influential in signing some high profile Tide players such as T.J. Yeldon, A.J. McCarron, Dee Hart and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. His ability as a quarterback coach made a difference in developing McCarron. Alabama’s offense had a good balance of run and pass during his tenure. Tide coaches and players were not happy to see McElwain leave to go to Colorado State, but they understood his opportunity.
McElwain’s teams have improved on a yearly basis at Colorado State. He is also good with the media. I remember being impressed with his answers after interviewing him after Alabama’s national title game win over Texas in 2009. Alabama beat writers that I have talked to predict McElwain will be one of the better coaches in the nation within the next few years.
He is not the home run hire than some Gator fans wanted, but McElwain is solid. He will fix the offense immediately and give this team a chance to win its division much quicker than many believe.
